There's lots in store for this year!
First off, we will continue with having a tournament every month. This year the schedule will be almost entirely NL Texas Hold-em.
I love mixed game tournaments, but frankly they are exponentially more difficult to run and the regular polls that I've taken through e-vite indicate a 75% preference for NLHE only. Buy-in amounts are still the same for no-limit tournament play.
Also, all tournaments will now feature an ENTIRELY OPTIONAL Bounty Chip side game. Click here for details.
Tentatively you can pencil in the THIRD Saturday of every month as tournament night at Pepper Street. Our first tournament will be on January 17th - you can put down this tournament in ink.
June and July will be the exceptions to the NLHE only format - these months are "Summer Madness!" at Pepper St.
June will feature a classic H.O.R.S.E. tournament and July will be FIXED Limit Omaha/8.
Summer Madness continues in August, though it's back to NLHE. But the tournament will be something special that I've had in mind for awhile now. I'm actually planning a full blown party.
Lunch will be served at noon, at 1pm we will begin a deep stack No Limit Hold-em tournament - with a structure designed to run for six hours! For those who bust out after the 2 hour rebuy period, there will be a side cash game table - which can also be used for sit-n-go's if preferred. Dinner will be served at 6, afterwards the final table concludes - followed by as much cash game fun as people can stand.
Speaking of cash game play, I would love to have more of it this year - and I plan to as long as there is enough interest. As always the cash games will be a mixed game format. A $40 buy-in with fixed and pot limit play. You can pencil in the First Friday of every month as a potential cash game night.
Finally, most ambitiously, I am going to endeavor to keep track of the standings for every single tournament and award points for each event.
The player with the most points at the end of the year will win a very special trophy and prize. Most importantly of all, he or she will also be declared the Pepper Street Poker Player of the Year!

Cash Game Refresher
Just a couple of minor points of etiquette about cash games at Pepper St. None of this stuff has ever been a problem, but I think it can't hurt to keep these basics in mind - especially since we've only recently delved into the realm of slightly higher stakes for our cash game play.
Unlike a tournament, you don't really have to be on time. You can be a bit late and that's just fine. As a matter of common courtesy to the other players, you should call the host if you are going to be more than 30 minutes late. If you are going to be substantially late (say an hour or more) it's best to clear it with the host well ahead of time.
Along this same line, it is bad etiquette to play for less than three hours. It's also not a good idea to play for the bare minimum amount of time and then leave abruptly without warning. Just to be safe, if you plan to leave before closing time (which is midnight at Pepper St.) it's best to let everyone know well ahead of time.
It's a very good idea to set a financial limit for yourself, and stick to it. We are definitely playing at a higher level than the tournaments now, and the last thing this host wants is for anyone to go home out of money they can't afford to lose.
Along these lines, I'd say that if you would be in deep agony if you dropped three or four buy-ins, then this probably isn't the game for you. Showing up with the intention to only spend $40 is playing with scared money, and it isn't really fair to the other players if you have to leave after one bad round of Pot Limit Omaha.
In a nutshell, you should look at the game as a chance to have fun. Not to supplement your income or angle shoot your way to victory. We will always be first and foremost a friendly game with friendly people. If you lose your full limit, think of it as a big bar tab on you. More than likely, someone else will get it next time.

H.O. Tournament (Hold-Em & Omaha/8) Report 11/22/08
For the second month in a row, we had 16 players. But with Omaha/8 thrown in to the mix the rebuys and action were even more furious, with the prize pool swelling to over $400. This was also one of the longest tournaments in recent memory, with the final hand playing out at 12:30!
The first player out was Bill K. who has gone deep on many occasions at Pepper Street.
We got down to one table at approximately 11pm, I made a unilateral decision to go to one table during the third break, even though we were still at 10 players. I didn't want to have to break again, right after a scheduled break. It didn't take long for one of the many short stacks to go out and bring it to an official final table of 9.
The bubble this time around would receive an amazing prize - a DVD of "Goonies"! Dan G. set his eyes on this prize, and masterfully maneuvered his stack into position to bust out just in time.
Fourth place went to Tony G. who finished his evening after a roller coaster run of both enormous and tiny chip counts with a $42 cash.
The third place finisher was John S. who was out when the board failed to improve his high ace against a pocket pair of jacks. He pocketed $63 and his carpooling buddy Bill K. was finally able to get home.
Finally, it was down to Dr. David M. and yours truly, his brother. Let me take this moment to say a big thanks to Marc F. and Jason H. who stayed to help shuffle and deal respectively.
The epic heads up battle ended with a wimper when my A6 failed to improve against David's pocket 3's. This was David M.'s THIRD title this year, the most of any player at Pepper St. in 2008. He took home the "World Class H.O." trophy as well as $189. This was my third second place finish out of the last four tournaments - always a bridesmaid! (Though a bridesmaid with $126!)
And so that will do it for tournaments this year! Thanks so much to everyone who made poker at Pepper St. such a success; I'm truly blessed to have such a great group of skilled and friendly poker players.

Final games of 2008
There will be a poker tournament at Pepper St. on Saturday night, November 22 at 7pm. We will be playing a mixed game tournament, alternating 20 minute rounds of No Limit Hold-em and Pre-flop Pot Limit Omaha/8.
The former game is one we're all familiar with, the latter is also familiar but with a tweak of my own. Before the flop, we will play Omaha/8 as Pot Limit, meaning that you can only raise the amount of the current pot - and after the flop we will play No Limit. We play this way pre-flop so we can see more flops, and have more strategy, and we switch to No Limit on fourth street so we don't have to worry about the math in regards to multiple split and side pots.
As per usual, this will be a $10 event with unlimited re-buys before the break and a single add-on afterwards. We will be sticking with last month's structure. I thought it was fantastic and felt a lot more like a real live tournament structure. Click on the NL Structure link on the link list to the right to check it out. $10 for 1500 in chips, you can rebuy with 500 or less. The add-on is $10 for 2000 in chips.
There will also be a cash game at Pepper St. on Friday night, December 5th starting at 7pm and ending by midnight. As always, the game will be capped at 8 players total (including me). We will be playing mixed games with a $40 buy-in and no cap on reloading.

Etiquette for a cash game at Pepper St. - if you are going to be more than a half hour late that is FINE, but please call and let us know your ETA. You should plan for putting in at least 3 hours of play as a courtesy to other players, and be sure to announce ahead of time if you ARE planning to only stay for the minimum. Of course this falls in line with setting a limit for yourself; if you reach that limit, you absolutely should stop playing, even if you haven't reached 3 hours. This always supersedes time commitment etiquette; we are a friendly game first and foremost and will always understand.
These games, the tournament and cash game, will in all likelihood be the last of poker at Pepper St. in 2008. Hope to see you there!

10/25/08 NLHE Tournament Report
16 players sat down for what would turn into five hours and five minutes of high adrenaline (but very friendly) No Limit Texas Hold-em tournament play.
For an hour and twenty minutes the rebuy period lived up to it's name as aggression and reloading were ever present. By the time the rebuy period ended the prize pool had swelled to where the first place winner would be walking away with $166. Not too shabby for a super friendly and low key home game tournament.
Ironically, the first player to bust out was the winner of the last tournament - Noah P. He took it in stride and with good humor, and headed home to count his money from last month.
We were down to one table in just under three and a half hours, and the blinds entered painful mode. By 1130 the bubble burst, with Dan I. getting the unlucky honor for the second month in a row.
The cooler of the night occurred about midway through the evening with a set over set. Danielle's trip tens on the river fell to Tom S.' made set of aces.
Dan G. got the first cash, finishing fourth and winning back his buy-in plus a few dollars more.
Yours truly, who had fought back from a short stack through most of the evening, managed to finish third.
Yet another epic heads up battle ensued between visiting Bay Area poker player Noah S. and our resident fountain of poker knowledge and good will Mike P.
In the end, after crippling blows had been exchanged multiple times in both directions, with dramatic back and forth shifts in the chip lead - it was Mike P. who took home the trophy and the $166. $111 went to Noah S. who could use it to cover most of his plane ticket.
All in all a great night! The next tournament is set for Saturday night, November 22, the week before Thanksgiving week. It will be a mixed event of Hold-Em and Omaha/8. A cash game is also on the horizon for Friday night, December 5. See you there!

NEW Blind Structure
Starting with our October 25 tournament, we will be using a new blind structure.

It's loosely based on the World Series of Poker blinds in the 1500K bracelet events - the major difference being that the rounds at Pepper Street are 20 or 15 minutes instead of one hour as they are in Vegas. (That, and Pepper St. tournaments are of course re-buy events).
Also, there are two extra levels early on (the 25/25 and the 150/300) that I added to help slow down play slightly before the rebuy period ends. I also made the 25/25 and 25/50 twice as long.
The rest of the structure is close to the WSOP, including ANTES, which are relatively new to Pepper St. Tournaments. (They were previewed in the Razz round of the mixed games tourney last month).
I'd love to hear what you all think, wether you have an opinion now or want to wait and see how it plays. Feel free to email me, don't be shy!

Tournament Report - now that's good P.O.R.N.!
Nearly every seat in the house was full, 17 players in all sat down to what would be an epic evening at Pepper Street.
At the last minute (Saturday afternoon) I abandoned my idea for alternating games every 15 minutes - I realized that trying to do this would be somewhat of a logistical nightmare. Instead I opted for a more tournament director friendly mixed game format of one game every hour, this led to much less confusion for the players and much less headaches for yours truly.
That said, it was still a bit of a challenge for everyone to keep up and keep a handle on what was being played at any particular moment. As much fun as mixed games can be, and it is absolutely my favorite in terms of playing - as a tournament director I must confess that I much prefer a single game tournament, especially hold-em, which is the simplest for people to deal and understand.
First up was Crazy Pineapple, which everyone seemed to enjoy as it is a slightly wacky cousin of hold-em.
Pot Limit Omaha/8 proved to be particularly daunting, especially at my table - with one hand that took a full ten minutes to complete due to a crazy number of all ins and a seemingly endless number of side pots. Somehow we got through it.
My favorite was next - Razz. Seven card stud low ball, or as I've taken to calling it - "This God forsaken game." It was the only game of the evening that was fixed limit, but the bet amounts were so large that it still saw some significant chip swings.
Finally, we slid into everyone's comfort zone - the ubiquitous No Limit Hold-em. By this point we had lost quite a number of players already, and quickly got down to one table.
Midnight approached and the blinds were gi-normous. Since we had 17 players to start, we would be paying four. I managed to squeak into this fourth paying position when my all-in pre-flop AK was cracked by Noah P's A6. Dan I. was also in the hand, and lost as well. Since he had fewer chips than I at the start of the hand, he got the honor of bubble boy.
Gabor V. finished next, and after a not so long head's up battle between Mike K. and Noah P. - the enormous chip stack of the latter proved too much for the former to overcome. Noah P. took home the cash, nearly $200, and the glorious P.O.R.N. Star Trophy.
HUGE thanks to everyone that came out to play, especially the new players! It was great seeing new faces, and I hope you all had enough fun that you'll come back to Pepper Street soon.
Thankfully for this game host, our next tournament will be No Limit Hold-em only. Like I said, it's not my favorite to play, but it's a heck of a lot easier than handling multiple games.
The likely date at this point is Saturday, October 18, but that is unofficial for now. I'm also racking my brain trying to figure if I can squeeze a cash game in at some point before November. If it does happen it will be on a Friday night.

Cash Game Report: Serious Fun!
A big thanks to all the players who took the plunge with me into the land of a higher buy in, and pot limit cash game play.
We had some big pots, and big excitement, but everyone was just as friendly as ever - with a good mix of Pepper Street Vets and newer players as well. JH was our big winner, racking up the chips in Pot Limit Omaha and Hold-Em.
TS had the biggest come back of the night, rebuilding his stack almost completely after reloading three times.
I abandoned the idea of a set list, and instead threw it up to dealer's choice - with the caveat that we not play a round of the same game twice in a row. I was worried that it would be Hold-em and Omaha/8 all night, but even without a regimented list, we still managed to play a great variety of games.
A highlight was the Pepper Street Poker debut of 2-7 Triple Draw. A fairly confusing, but wicked fun, low balll version of five card draw. Unlike Razz, where straights and flushes are okay in a low hand, and aces are low - in 2-7 TD (also called Kansas City Low Ball) straights and flushes count AND aces are high only.
Another game making it's debut was Pot Limit Omaha - that's right, up until last night, it's always been Omaha/8 only. Pot Limit Omaha (the high only version of the game) is currently the second most popular game in the world, and it lived up to it's reputation last night as an action game - with some of the biggest pots of the evening.
I don't think there is any going back from here - pot limit play, and a higher buy-in are here to stay. There may or may not be one more cash game in 2008, stay tuned!

COMING UP: Slightly more serious cash game.
In recognition of the many polls run through evite, we will be running a slightly higher stakes version of the PSP Cash Game, from 7pm to 12 midnight on 9/12/08.
Most games will still be fixed limit, with some pot-limit play:
Buy In: $40 (No cap on reloads).
Fixed Limits: 50c - $1
Blinds in Pot Limit play: 25c/50c
Unlike previous cash games, we will not allow dealers choice. We will be playing from the following set list of games. This may change in the future, but I'd like to avoid trapping people into too much of one game or another, and for that matter too much or too little of one set of limits.

Pot Limit Omaha/8
If we're still playing by the end, the list starts over, with the omission of Limit Hold-Em and Omaha/8.
I'm a little apprehensive, but I think for the people that come (the game is capped at 8 total), this may be exactly what they're looking for. Still Pepper St., still friendly, but definitely more for the card and poker-centric players than tournament night.
Most games will still be fixed limit, with some pot-limit play:
Buy In: $40 (No cap on reloads).
Fixed Limits: 50c - $1
Blinds in Pot Limit play: 25c/50c
Unlike previous cash games, we will not allow dealers choice. We will be playing from the following set list of games. This may change in the future, but I'd like to avoid trapping people into too much of one game or another, and for that matter too much or too little of one set of limits.

8/23/08 Hold-Em Tournament Report
Well, I was going to keep track of the bust outs, but neglected to do so. Of the 11 players we had, all I can remember is the first out, the bubble and the top three finishers.
Mike P., who has cashed in second place for two (or maybe three) tournaments in a row - was the first to depart, shortly after the two hour mark, a round and a half after the re-buy period's end.
John S. was bubble boy, finishing fourth. He pointed out to me that this was the second time in a row for him, in the tournaments that he's played in at Pepper St. to fall just shy of the money.
Jason H. finished third, riding a roller coaster ride of chips up and down for the last half hour of play.
Dog finished second, to David M. who took down the tournament - coming from behind and a large chip deficit to topple his opponent with the deadly combination of aggression and a bit of luck.
All in all a great evening, and I can't wait for the next one - a mixed event tournament of P.O.R.N. Yes, you read that right. Pineapple, Omaha/8, Razz and No Limit Hold-em. A bit more difficult for yours truly, the TD, to run; but I know it will be a blast. Be sure to click on the structure sheet.
